Radon in PEI

Long term exposure to elevated levels of radon gas in the home is becoming more of a health concern. Studies show that up to 1 in 5 homes in PEI have radon levels over 200 bq/m3 (becquerels per cubic metre), a level Health Canada recommends mitigation to lower radon levels in the home.  Since radon freely moves through soil particles and water below your home, radon levels can differ significantly even from your neighbour’s home, or previous testing results.

The only way to know if your home has elevated levels of radon … IS TO TEST FOR RADON.

Long Term Radon Measurement Test

Island Radon Testing will conduct a radon measurement for your home done by a professionally certified radon measurement tester for a minimum of 91 days/3 months.  Three months is the minimum recommended time to provide a radon level measurement test. That timeframe follows the testing guidelines of Health Canada and the C-NRPP, the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program.

The radon measurement test completed by Island Radon Testing includes the Accustar AT100 Alpha Track detector, approved by the C-NRPP and Health Canada for long-term professional radon measurement.

Before the test, Island Radon Testing will complete a radon consultation with you, outlining the health concerns about radon, review how the testing and equipment works. Professional installation of the radon testing kit is done in accordance with C-NRPP and Health Canada guidelines.  Island Radon Testing will complete two check-ins with you during the test to discuss any questions or concerns about radon you may have.

Once the testing time length has been completed, Island Radon Measurement will collect the test kit from your home and forward the kit to a certified laboratory for analysis.  Once the lab results are completed, Island Radon Testing will complete a report for you with the radon level results and outline any potential follow-up that is needed.

Short-Term Radon Measurement Testing for Real Estate Transactions

When buying a home, there isn’t always time to conduct a long-term radon measurement if you have concerns about the level of radon exposure.  There is a short-term radon measurement testing option available that will capture a snapshot of the radon levels during a brief time in the home.

Island Radon Testing uses the Corentium Pro continuous radon monitor, a C-NRPP approved professional continuous radon monitor to conduct a short-term test of a minimum 96 hours/4 days under closed house conditions. That includes minimal opening and closing of doors, windows and other irregular air flow into the home, following the strict guidelines of C-NRPP and CARST (Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technicians)

The short-term radon measurement testing Island Radon Testing performs includes a radon consultation from our C-NRPP certified professional radon measurement professional that includes the health concerns about radon, review how the testing and equipment works and will provide professional installation of the continuous radon monitor in accordance with C-NRPP and Health Canada guidelines.  Signage will also be installed on your windows and doors as a reminder to minimize the time that exterior doors are opened.

Once the test is completed, the equipment will be collected from your home and a radon level report will be provided to you within 24 hours that includes the hourly and daily radon levels captured in your home.

  • A short-term radon measurement test should never be used to determine if radon mitigation should be completed.
  • Health Canada always recommends a long-term test be completed after a short-term test for the most accurate results.
